Modern Foreign Languages - French
What?
Miss Coleman is the person responsible for monitoring and leading the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum at Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School. Learning a foreign language is part of the National Curriculum and is a requirement for all children within Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6). We aim to utilise a clear progression of learning throughout KS2. Our goal is to develop confidence and competence in the learning of MFL within KS2 so that our children are prepared for the next stage of their foreign language learning journey beyond Year 6.
How?
Holy Trinity has adopted the Language Angels approach to the teaching of French within KS2. The Language Angels Scheme was chosen because it is in line with the recommendations of the National Curriculum and the requirements outlined in the Department for Education Languages Programmes of Study for Key Stage 2. Each class has a timetabled lesson of 30 minutes per week. French is taught in a whole-class setting by the class teacher. Each lesson has clear, achievable objectives and incorporates different learning styles.
Our MFL scheme of work encompasses the following five key language skills:
-
Speaking
-
Listening
-
Reading
-
Writing
-
Grammar
Progression through the Language Angels Scheme of Work fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum in that all pupils will:
-
understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
-
speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
-
write at varying length, for different audiences and purposes, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
-
discover and develop an appreciation of a range of authentic writing in the language studied
So?
Our children will listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding. They will explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words. They will engage in conversations, express opinions and seek clarification where necessary. Pupils will speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary and phrases whilst using increasingly accurate pronunciation and intonation. Pupils will read carefully and show an understanding of words, phrases and simple writing. They will appreciate stories, poems and rhymes whilst broadening their ability to understand new words which are introduced into familiar material. Children will write phrases from memory and adapt these to new situations. They will be able to describe people, places and things orally and in writing.
